Isabel Anaya

USC Keck School of Medicine

Hi! My name is Isabel and I am an incoming first-year medical student at Keck School of Medicine. I am originally from San Jose, California and completed my undergraduate degree at Northwestern University. I took a gap year between undergrad and medical school to better focus on my medical school application and gain additional experience as a Health Coach for the UCLA MyLife program. Through text and video calls, I supported patients as they found the motivation to change their lifestyle habits and lose weight.

During undergrad, I was primarily involved in research at the Life Span Development Lab. I studied the physiological patterns and emotions that came up in both positive and negative conversations between people in close relationships (married couples, teens and caregivers, sibling pairs). I was also an intern at Lurie Children’s Hospital in the Psychiatric Partial Hospitalization Program. I loved working on a team with the staff at PHP and the patients taught me so much about processing our own emotions and providing space for others to do the same.

These experiences influenced the role that I understand doctors to have in healthcare and what I want out of my own career. I aspire to be a doctor that works hand in hand with her patients to take into account both the best medical choices and the influences that all other spheres of life have on one’s health.

Outside of academics, I joined a sorority, Chi Omega, and became involved in both internal chapter leadership and external leadership as part of the Panhellenic Executive Board. I also made some of my closest friends in that community. Drinking lots of coffee got me through college and I was way too excited when my favorite coffee shop, Philz Coffee, opened up near campus in my last year. Recently I’ve been learning to bake traditional Taiwanese breads and getting into hula hooping. I’m excited to join the Sol team and looking forward to getting to know you!
